Workshops at Flax Mill: the wheels are turning, the dye-pot is bubbling

4 workshops by master-crafters at the Flax Mill in August

I would hereby like to invite you to take part in our spectacular crafts-workshops this summer!

The idea:

  • Be taught by some of the most distinguished master-crafters on these shores.
  • Learn one or several of the traditional techniques used in textile-making.
  • Come away with a unique piece created by yourself using the finest raw-materials.
  • Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of our gardens behind the mill-cottage -we ae putting up the little marquee for the workshops.
  • Of course, the mill is running and open for you to visit while you are our guest.

*Saturday, August 1st, 10 am to 4 pm:

Spinning yarn, both wool and linen, on a spinning wheel!

Each participant will be supplied with wheel and raw material, both beginners and advanced spinners are welcome.

The teacher: Lorna Shannon is giving us the pleasure!

The secretary of the Ulster Guild of Sinners, Weavers and Dyers is one of the most profiled textile experts, a weaver as well as a spinner. She owns the “Cran +Coara” label and will teach you in a most holistic way.

The workshop will run from 10 to 4 and is strictly limited to 6 participants (that’s the number of wheels we have available).

Fee: £ 20.00 – that includes the raw materials.

*Saturday, 8th of August, 10.30 am to 4 pm:

Wet – Felting with one of the best teachers you can get!

Sarah Foster – Jarden is taking this one. A known spinner – many of our visitors have watched her linen – spinning demonstrations at the Open Days – she also felts like nobody else.

The workshop runs from 10.30 onwards and is limited to 8 participants – each will be supplied with their own work – table and a large lot of raw material – you’ll need both to operate well.

Sarah says: “Two old towels and no fear of getting wet will help matters!”

£ 30.00 is the fee, as all other workshops “first come first take”.

*Saturday, August 15th, 11 am to 4 pm:

Our “commission – spinner” and yarn – dyer, Christine Casey is rocking in to teach you dyeing with bot natural and acid – dyes.

Christine is our sole-supplier of hand -spun and self – dyed yarn for the Flax – Mill top range of hand-woven blankets.

She will be supplying dye-vessels, raw materials etc. and can take on a maximum of 10 participants, £ 20.00 is the fee and as the other workshops, “first come first take”.

*Finally, on Saturday, August 22nd, from 10.30 am onwards:

the making of a lampshade using Irish Linen as the raw – material, will be taught by another “one of a kind” crafter, Jill Gurney.

The owner of “Linen lane Crafts” exports her spectacular lamp – shades world-wide. She uses the best raw-materials only – you will take your creation home with you.

For space – reasons and due to the complex teaching the number is limited to 6 participants, first come first take. Fee is £ 30.00, starting time 10.30 am.

OUR TREAT:

There will be a good cup of coffee or tea, a bit of home – baked cake and – on request – a little bite of lunch available for you!

The mill owner will gladly take you for a little tour to see our weaving looms running and show you our products.
